Parity Violation effects in highly-charged ions

چکیده
Parity-nonconserving (PNC) atomic effects originate from the electroweak interaction of atomic electrons with the nucleus via Z-boson exchange. Comparing experimental results with theoretical predictions of the standard model allows to search for ”new physics” beyond the standard model (e.g., a second Z-boson or new fermions) [1]. In the case of neutral atoms here is the discrepancy between theoretical and experimental results for PNC effects in the case of neutral atoms that might be explained by the uncertainties in the calculations caused by the interelectronic interactions, correlation effects etc. In highly-charged ions (HCI), on the other hand, the binding to the nucleus dominates by far the electronelectron interaction. The spin-independent part of an effective weak interaction Hamiltonian mediated by a Zboson exchange is given by

Atomic Parity-Violation in Highly-Charged Ions
The investigation of parity-violation (PV) in forbidden atomic transitions is an active and fundamental research area, especially for its implications on the physics beyond the Standard Model [1]. Atomic transitions may be employed to study PV effects originating from weak neutral currents, i.e. due to the exchange of a Z boson between a nucleon of the nucleus and a bound electron. Experiments ...
متن کاملGlobal polarization and parity violation study in Au+Au collisions
We present results on the parity violation effects and global system polarization measurements in Au+Au collisions at √ sNN = 62 GeV obtained with the STAR detector at RHIC. The parity violation effects are studied by three particle azimuthal correlations of charged particles. The global polarization of the system is examined by measuring the polarization of strange hyperons with respect to the...
متن کاملProspects for parity-nonconservation experiments with highly charged heavy ions.
We discuss the prospects for parity non-conservation experiments with highly charged heavy ions. Energy levels and parity mixing for heavy ions with two to five electrons are calculated. We investigate two-photontransitions and the possibility to observe interference effects between weakmatrix elements and Stark matrix elements for periodic electric field configurations.
متن کاملThe Standard Model in Strong Fields: Electroweak Radiative Corrections for Highly Charged Ions
Electroweak radiative corrections to the matrix elements 〈ns1/2|ĤPNC|n′p1/2〉 are calculated for highly charged hydrogenlike ions. These matrix elements constitute the basis for the description of the most parity nonconserving (PNC) processes in atomic physics. The operator ĤPNC represents the parity nonconserving relativistic effective atomic Hamiltonian at the tree level. The deviation of thes...
متن کاملHighlights from STAR: probing the early medium in heavy ion collisions
We present highlights of recent results from the STAR Collaboration at RHIC, focusing on the properties of the early medium created in heavy ion collisions. We emphasize the strangeness production including the observation of a hypernucleus (the hypertriton), the observation of reaction-plane-dependent angular correlation of charged particles searching for local strong parity violation effects ...
